BJC Healthcare School Outreach

BJC HealthCare School Outreach and Youth Development is committed to providing the best possible health education resources and health career information to school communities for youth K-12 and the adults who impact their lives. Teaching media literacy is at the forefront of this task.

By helping young people understand and interpret the constant barrage of media messages they receive daily, we are giving them the skills necessary for a lifetime of healthy living. One example is teaching about the harmful effects of tobacco and lifting the smokescreen of tobacco ads that entice young people to begin smoking. Or what about the impact of media on youth violence and alcohol use? Its easy to see how television producers have targeted youth for marketing ideas, beliefs, values and merchandise. By providing thoughtful conversation about advertising and media content, BJC School Outreach and school communities can work together to help young people truly make the best possible choices about their health – for life!
